Newbridge sits on the flat carse ground west of Edinburgh Airport, where the topsoil is shallow and the subsoil turns to heavy, slow-draining clay within 300–400 mm. That single fact drives most of our specification decisions in EH28. Every driveway we lay here starts with excavation to a firm formation, a non-woven geotextile separator, and a minimum of 150 mm of compacted Type 1 MOT placed in two layers — 200 mm where a horsebox, tractor or delivery lorry uses the access. Without the membrane, clay fines pump upward into the sub-base each winter and the surface starts rutting within five to eight years.

Drainage is the second Newbridge-specific issue. Surface water here cannot simply be allowed to soak away, and any new hard surface over five square metres draining toward the highway needs a SUDS-compliant solution.
