Where Balerno sits, and why it matters for your driveway

Balerno sits 7 miles south-west of Edinburgh city centre at the foot of the Pentland Hills Regional Park, between the Water of Leith and the Bavelaw Burn. The village climbs from around 130m above sea-level at Lanark Road West to over 200m on the Bavelaw and Marchbank slopes, which is why drainage design — not material choice — is the single biggest factor in a Balerno driveway lasting 25+ years.

Three kinds of Balerno house — three different driveway specs

Balerno's housing stock divides cleanly into three groups: original 19th-century mill-workers' cottages and sandstone villas around Main Street, Bridge Road and the Mill Lade; mid-century semis and bungalows through Dean Park, Cockburn Crescent and Marchbank; and newer 1990s-2020s executive estates around Ravelrig, Larchfield Neuk and the former paper-mill site. The City of Edinburgh Council expects sympathetic materials (natural stone, riven setts, muted block paving — not bright reds or grey-on-grey contemporary patterns) and the retention of original boundary walls, gate piers and sandstone kerbs. We've completed conservation-compliant driveways on Main Street and have the spec sheets the council typically requests.

SUDS, the Bavelaw Burn and the Water of Leith

Run-off from the Pentlands feeds the Bavelaw Burn and the Water of Leith, both of which run through the village. Scottish Water and the Council require SUDS-compliant surfaces on any new or replacement driveway over 5m² that drains toward the highway. In practice this means either a permeable wearing course (permeable block paving or gravel) or a soakaway sized for the local clay-loam subsoil — which we core-test before quoting on properties above Mansfield Road.
